Philodendrons

Difficulty: Easy

Pet Friendly: No

Native to South America, Philodendrons grow naturally on the rainforest floor, often finding a tree or rock to grow on the side of.

This tropical plant requires bright indirect sunlight and good drainage to thrive. Containers with drainage holes and well-draining tropical houseplant soil will help prevent root rot. If possible, use a mix with 30% generic tropical houseplant soil, 30% orchid bark, 30% coco coir, and 10% compost or worm castings. Wait for the top two inches of the soil to dry out before watering again. If you cannot provide your Philodendron with this mixture, I have found that regular tropical houseplant soil works well. To help your regular tropical houseplant soil mix boost growth for your Philodendron, add some slightly acidic fertilizers. A sprinkle of coffee grounds has helped me in the past.
