Aglaonemas (Chinese Evergreens)

Difficulty: Easy

Pet Friendly: No

Native to Asia and New Guinea, Aglaonemas, also known as Chinese Evergreens, grow naturally in rainforests under the shade of large trees.

This tropical plant requires indirect sunlight, high humidity, and good drainage to thrive. These plants will tolerate low light conditions and lower humidity levels, but will be healthier in regular lighting and 70% humidity. Containers with drainage holes and well-draining tropical houseplant soil will help prevent root rot. If possible, use a mix with equal parts peat, vermiculite, and perlite. Wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again. If you cannot provide your Aglaonema with this mixture, I have found that regular tropical houseplant soil does well for some time, but I would recommend switching the potting mixture eventually. To help your regular tropical houseplant soil mix work for your Aglaonema, add some slightly acidic fertilizers. A sprinkle of coffee grounds has helped me in the past.
