Calatheas
Difficulty: Intermediate
Pet Friendly: Yes, but only in small amounts
Native to Central and South America, Calatheas grow naturally on the rainforest floor.
This tropical plant requires low sunlight, high humidity, and good drainage to thrive. Although Calathea plants can grow in bright, indirect sunlight, they prefer low to medium light conditions. Do not put them in a room that doesn't receive any sunlight, however, as all plants require sunlight to grow. Calatheas prefer humidity levels of 50% or higher. Containers with drainage holes and well-draining tropical houseplant soil will help prevent root rot. If possible, use a mix with 30% generic tropical houseplant soil, 30% perlite, 30% coco coir, and 10% compost or worm castings. Wait for the top two inches of the soil to dry out before watering again. If you cannot provide your Calathea with this mixture, I have found that regular tropical houseplant soil works for some time, but I would recommend switching the potting mixture eventually. To help your regular tropical houseplant soil mix boost growth for your Calathea, add some slightly acidic fertilizers. A sprinkle of coffee grounds has helped me in the past.
