Alocasias
Difficulty: Intermediate
Pet Friendly: No
Native to Asia and eastern Australia, Alocasias grow naturally on the rainforest floor, often finding a tree or rock to grow on the side of.
This tropical plant requires bright indirect sunlight, high humidity, and good drainage to thrive. Humidity levels between 60-80% are best. Containers with drainage holes and well-draining tropical houseplant soil will help prevent root rot. If possible, use a mix with 30% generic tropical houseplant mix, 30% orchid bark, 30% peat moss, and 10% vermiculite. Wait for the top two inches of the soil to dry out before watering again. If you cannot provide your Alocasia with this mixture, I have found that regular tropical houseplant soil works well. To help your regular tropical houseplant soil mix boost growth for your Alocasia, add some slightly acidic fertilizers. A sprinkle of coffee grounds has helped me in the past.
