Gymnocalycium
Difficulty: Easy
Pet Friendly: No
Native to South America, Gymnocalycium cacti grow naturally in grasslands and rocky ground.
This cactus requires bright indirect sunlight and good drainage to thrive. These cacti can handle direct sunlight but will have difficulty flowering later in life if still receiving too much sun. Containers with drainage holes and well-draining cactus and succulent soil will help prevent root rot. If possible, use a mix with 70-80% coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Wait for the soil to completely dry out before watering again. If you cannot provide your Gymnocalycium with this mixture, I have found that regular cactus soil does well for some time, but I would recommend switching the potting mixture eventually. To help your regular cactus soil mix work for your Gymnocalycium, add some slightly acidic fertilizers. A sprinkle of coffee grounds has helped me in the past.
